Greek mythology in arts and lifeGreek mythology in arts and life
Greek mythology is the body of stories belonging to the Ancient Greeks concerning their gods and heroes, the nature of the world and the origins and significance of their own cult and ritual practices. Mythology was at the heart of everyday life in ancient Greece. Greeks regarded mythology as a part of their history. They used myth to explain natural phenomena, cultural variations, traditional enmities and friendships. There are various modern theories about the origins of Greek mythology. According to the Scriptural Theory, all mythological legends are derived from the narratives of the Scriptures, although the real facts have been disguised and altered. According to the Historical Theory all the persons mentioned in mythology were once real human beings, and the legends relating to them are merely the additions of later times. Archaeological excavations at Mycenaean and Minoan sites seems to support the historical theory and provided archaeological evidence of many of the mythological details about gods and heroes, [the recent discovery of the legendary palace of King Minos at Crete, the discovery of the city of Troy in Asia Minor,etc.].

Greek mythology has had extensive influence on the culture, the arts and the literature of Western civilization and remains part of Western heritage and language. It has been a part of the educational fabric from childhood,

Greek mythology was depicted in artifacts throughout the different ages from antiquity to modern times as can be seen in the following photos. The accompaning music is that of an old Greek song dating from the 40s [Ahi Ela (Erotica Ghymnassia)
