High on the mountain, I gazed o’er the sea,
My hair grazed the sky, windswept, and free.
Rugged the climb up, that led to the top;
the more steep the ascent, the less I could stop.
In triumph hard-won, the summit I gained,
the owner of naught, but a kingdom attained.
In glee I glanced down ‘pon the town at my feet;
the cares I’d left there, ne’er could compete.
Those burdensome woes I sloughed away
at nature’s behest to revel and play.
Rocky circumference of crests did surround,
Some were stark-fanged, others snowbound.
I pleasured to see a deep green crevasse,
the entrance as smooth as ice-mirrored glass.
In wonderment gazed, vast spaces before;
loosed in abandon a loud riotous roar.
Craggy peaks ’round, silent sentinels to age,
echoed my chafed howl unleashed from it’s cage.
O, to roam free, in this stark wonderland,
leaping o’er boulders, strewn by a troll’s hand;
ran like a wolf, shed accustomed restraint,
along the high path, defying complaint.
I achieved the plateau, to gasp in thin air,
lungs strained to replenish the life I’d lost there.
Higher atop the peak than I’d been yet,
knife-edged horizon my vision did whet.
Thirty and three miles impended my sense
o’er the edge of the world, ne’er encompassed by fence.
By this view astonished , turned sunward my face,
I spread my arms wide, the sky to embrace,
thanked All-Father, the wind Woden, blown free;
from that summit, I sang only to be.
On world’s top, ancient stones strewn around,
a stone circle I built, pagan spirit unbound;
I let this primeval urge ,unreproved,
a volcanic reaction to the spirit behooved.
Sky-clad, I lingered dancing desirous to sing,
Took joy in the moment, as in rites of Spring.
Praises sung loud to the god of my life,
merrily I leapt to the fancied fife.
At last, shadows lengthened drew o’er me;
westward I watched the sun swallowed by sea.
A last comradely shout, I dressed me once more,
down the mountain I scrambled, gaining earth’s floor.
Glanced o’er my shoulder, through gleam of twilight,
toward Mount Marathon’s top; did a figure I sight?
Briefly seemed one dark cloaked I saw there,
bearing a staff, weaving signs in the air.
The vision gone, to town I drew near;
the veil between worlds, I passed through, right clear.
I’ve not returned to that scene of my youth,
those halcyon days of more innocent truth.
Yet to stone circle a bond still remains,
I sing in my memory, and dance without chains.
