WET a Matrix fan filmWET a Matrix fan film
One rainy afternoon I decided to con a few of my mates into shooting a bit of a short film, which I have called WET.
WET is a homage to the matrix movies and their take on our perceptions of reality. In writing the story I was influenced by the Animatrix short ‘world record’ where an athlete’s obsession with running faster and faster leads him to wake up from the ‘machine created’ dream of reality and allows him to see the real world, with dire consequences. Wet explores the idea that if an elite athlete can tear a hole in that vale of reality then what about a 133+ gamer, and if then the looking glass has been broken what else could be mirrored by the multitude of its multifaceted falsified reflections.
I titled the film WET in reference to the liquid nature of the transference between realities within the matrix films. The rubber glove which inhabits WET is symbolic of the barriers, both dictated and self-imposed, between that which we perceive to be and that which is reality. The tight, ill fitting glove is representative of the inflexible fake skin of a reality created for us by others. A counterfeit of a real hand that we are forced to wear, even the sweaty clammy interior of the rubber glove is a simulacra of the true moisture of freedom. The glove is that barrier keeping us from the free flowing fluidness of self-determination.
Wet was made one rainy weekend in the southwestern Victorian town of Warrnambool. The movie was shot with a Panasonic NV-DS15 digital video camera using Sony mini DV video cassettes. The movie was edited using Adobe premier LE, and compressed using the Div-x codec utilities. I stole the digital rain effect from some screen saver I downloaded and the pictures of the power plant pods from the official matrix web site. The music was created using Sonic Foundry Acid 2.0. The story boards were drawn on blue cartridge paper using a black .03 Uniball Micro deluxe pen.
But lets face it, WET is pretty amateurish, the special effects are cheesy the camera work is ordinary to say the least and maybe someone would like to explain to me what this white balance thing is all about. And hello, ‘Matrix Fan Film’, where is the Kung fu and bullet time? Let alone the tight leather pants. Ok maybe the rubber glove bit is a little bit more than a bit wanky, but you’ve got to admit the techno sound track is almost thumping and almost techno.
